Charging times for

Public Charging

High-power charging station

You can charge your vehicle particularly quickly at a high-power charging station (e.g. such as those in the ChargeNet network). The direct current (DC) provided at these stations offers significantly higher charging capacities than with alternating current (AC), such as that supplied by a domestic socket. This is why high-power charging stations such as these are especially suitable for charging when travelling. In the display, you can see the minimum time needed to charge from 10 to 80% of the battery charge level with maximum vehicle charging capacity. Within this range, charging is fastest and also preserves the battery. A look at the map shows you all the high-power charging stations within the BMW Charging network. (Valid as of 22/03/2023)

Fast charging station

If you need to act quickly in the city or while travelling, a fast charging station is just the right choice. This is because the direct current (DC) provided at these stations offers higher charging capacities than with alternating current (AC), such as that supplied by a domestic socket. This is why fast charging stations such as these are especially suitable for charging when you are travelling. In the display, you can see the minimum time needed to charge from 10 to 80% of the battery charge level with up to 50 kW output. AC charging station

You will find public charging stations with alternating current (AC) almost everywhere. They are especially suitable for regular charging over longer periods of time – such as overnight or while you are at work. In the display, you will find the minimum time for charging from 0-100% battery charge level with a maximum output of 22 kW. The charging performance depends on the equipment options for the vehicle. Home Charging

Wallbox / Flexible Fast Charger

At home you can charge your vehicle with a wallbox or the Flexible Fast Charger. Alternating current (AC) is used for both. Depending on the vehicle, special equipment and market, the wallbox provides a maximum charging output of 22 kW, the Flexible Fast Charger a maximum of 11 kW. In the display, you will see the minimum time for charging from 0-100% battery charge level with an output of 11 kW.

The charging capacity depends on the charge level, ambient temperature, individual driving profile and use of auxiliary devices as well as the actual vehicle selected. The charging times apply to ambient temperatures of 23 °C following a prior journey and may deviate according to usage characteristics.

Charging your electric car at high-power charging stations is the fastest method. With a charging power of up to 350 kW at fast charging stations, the time it takes to charge your car is very short. The charging power depends on which model you have. For instance, a BMW i5 needs to charge for 10 minutes at a fast charging station to gain 156 kilometres. With the BMW Wallbox or BMW Flexible Fast Charger, a BMW i5 can be conveniently charged at home in 8 hours and 30 minutes.

HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY AN ELECTRIC CAR NEEDS.

The power consumption for charging an electric car depends on various factors. However, your own driving behaviour, the associated average speed and outside temperature also play a role in this. Monthly charging power costs depend, above all, on the distance travelled and the electric car's consumption. Your own driving behaviour also affects this. Furthermore, the selected charging tariff and charging locations are also key factors in the electricity cost.

OPTIMISING THE LIFE OF YOUR ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY.

The service life of a high-voltage battery can be affected by your own usage habits. Your high-voltage battery should mainly be charged at a low charging power at AC charging stations or at a wallbox. For general use, it makes sense to run your car with a battery charge of between 10% and 80%. You can set a charging target of 80% for this. An efficient and anticipatory driving style also helps to increase the range of the battery and optimise its service life.

The values of fuel consumptions, CO2 emissions and energy consumptions shown were determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable at the time of type approval. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers optional equipment and the different size of wheels and tires available on the selected model.

The CO2 efficiency specifications are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the European Regulation in its current version applicable. The values shown are based on the fuel consumption, CO2 values and energy consumptions according to the NEDC cycle for the classification.

When charging times are shown they can be affected by a number of factors such as type of charger, voltage supplied to the charger/car and type of current (AC or DC) supplied to the charger/car. The car also plays a role in charging times as it can be set by the driver to accept various different amperage and should preconditioning be used to heat or cool the vehicle while charging this will also affect the charging time.

The basis for the calculation of the charging times for 100 km range is the electric consumption of the vehicle based on the use of a high-Powered Charging station (HPC) or charging type and current as indicted in the literature above. The testing procedure measures are based on a 23 degrees Celsius battery start and ambient temperature with certification values excluding additional auxiliary consuming devices and systems within the vehicle such as seat heating, displays, air conditioning.

Individual consumption (fuel economy) may differ due to driving profile, vehicle load profile, auxiliary consumer usage, temperature, and ambient conditions. Consumption is based on WLTP or NEDC (whichever is indicated) best case conditions and is independently tested for BMW Group. If you are comparing this range with other models or brands make sure they are stating the same WLTP or NEDC testing regime. These results can be used to compare vehicles on a close to “like for like” basis but are unlikely to be achieved in real world conditions for reasons including temperature variation, driving conditions and the use of the auxiliary systems referred to above.
