SUSTAINABILITY AT BMW.

Cars play a central role in today’s society, and their importance is likely to increase even further in the future, given growing mobility demands worldwide. On the other hand, concerns about climate change are presenting the automotive industry with ever greater challenges. The BMW Group is more prepared to meet them than most established premium manufacturers. That is because a commitment to environmental protection, sustainable business practices, an early focus on electric mobility and many other contributions towards climate change mitigation have been shaping the company’s values and actions for decades. As far back as 2007, BMW EfficientDynamics introduced a comprehensive technology package to significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Among other innovations, this gave rise to the BMW i3, whose fully sustainable concept made it a pioneer of climate-friendly electric mobility. Moreover, no competitor comes close to matching the comprehensive and diverse BMW Group portfolio of electrified models (fully electric BEV, partly electric PHEV), with half a million such vehicles delivered to customers to date. Other efforts in the field of sustainability include minimising European production facilities’ carbon footprint by only purchasing power from renewable sources, which has been the case since 2017, and discontinuing the use of rare earths in the production of electric motors from 2020.
