MAXIMISES THE BENEFITS.

The efficiency of the BMW X5.

There are several reasons for the power and efficiency of the BMW X5: fuel-saving diesel engines, sophisticated aerodynamics – and a whole range of other BMW EfficientDynamics measures.[1]

BMW EFFICIENTDYNAMICS.

BMW EFFICIENTDYNAMICS.

Maximum performance for minimumm fuel consumption.

Whether the goal is maximum performance or minimum fuel consumption – for us, the focus is always on delivering quintessential BMW driving pleasure.
BMW EfficientDynamics is the strategy developed by BMW to minimise fuel consumption and emissions while simultaneously increasing dynamics and driving pleasure. It is a comprehensive technology package that includes the drive train, energy management and the vehicle concept – and is standard in every BMW.
The new generation of petrol and diesel engines in the BMW TwinPower Turbo family is responsible for the improved performance and lower fuel consumption. Optimised aerodynamics, along with intelligent lightweight construction, contribute to increased efficiency. The latter lowers the weight while at the same time increasing the car's rigidity. The BMW concept of intelligent lightweight construction involves deploying the right material in the right place, because every material has its specific strengths. This is a demonstration of the impressive innovation leadership at BMW, the only major car manufacturer that relies on ultralight and highly rigid carbon fibre (CFRP) as a key material.

ECO PRO MODE.

As soon as you switch to the ECO PRO Mode, everything is geared towards greater efficiency and depending on your individual driving style, this results in a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20 per cent (according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study).
Another five per cent can be saved by the additional functions of coasting and ECO PRO Route. This mode optimises accelerator and transmission response as well as shift points, and intelligently adapts the heating/air conditioning strategy. The Control Display shows you which EfficientDynamics technologies are currently lowering your fuel consumption. You’ll also receive ECO PRO tips that relate to your current driving situation to help you boost efficiency even further.
Another feature of the ECO PRO mode is the coasting function: If no driving power is required within a speed range of 50 km/h to 160 km/h, the system disconnects the engine and the car coasts.

AERODYNAMICS.

The entire vehicle design is testament to the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The optimised, aerodynamic front apron and undercarriage feature innovative improvements that reduce air resistance and fuel consumption.

  • Air Curtain and Air Breather

The front apron is a prominent design feature that embodies the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The integrated Air Curtain channels air through two vertical air inlets and along the front wheel arches. The accelerated air flow creates a kind of "curtain" on the outer side of the wheels. Then there’s the Air Breather, which channels the air flow at the front wheels. These innovative technologies reduce turbulence and air resistance, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.

  • Rear spoiler and Air Blade

The rear spoiler at the roof edge and the Air Blades joined to it at the sides go together to form a highly efficient so-called "trailing edge". The precisely defined air flow at the rear reduces disruptive air swirl and the braking effect of negative pressure to a minimum.
