BMW TWINPOWER TURBO ENGINES.

Thanks to BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the innovative new generation of BMW engines from the BMW EfficientDynamics engine range can deliver an agile performance and excellent responsiveness even at low rpms, all while being exceptionally fuel efficient and low in emissions. Increased efficiency and optimal dynamics guarantee noticeably more intense driving pleasure.
The petrol engines feature innovative turbocharger technology, Valvetronic fully variable valve control, including Double-VANOS variable camshaft control and High-Precision Injection. Together, the highly sophisticated components provide tremendous power delivery and improved efficiency.

8-SPEED STEPTRONIC TRANSMISSION.

The 8-speed Steptronic transmission sets new benchmarks in comfort and dynamic performance and is a key element of BMW EfficientDynamics. The unusually fine increments between gears facilitate optimum power delivery at all speeds. This reduces fuel consumption significantly, while allowing the driver to enjoy increased sportiness and dynamic performance. The engine speed is reduced, particularly at high speeds, which in turn reduces both fuel consumption and engine noise.
The converter clutch also helps – even if the car is in manual mode. Together with the fast engine speed transitions and precise transmission tuning it guarantees incredibly smooth gearshifts.
Integrated functions such as predictive drive train and the constant monitoring of the vehicle's movements and the traffic situation considerably affect the way the transmission shifts gears. Regardless of the current driving mode, the system always selects the most suitable gear.

The M Performance model BMW M135i is the sportiest BMW 1 Series variant in every respect. Features such as variable sport steering, M Sport suspension or Adaptive M suspension further boost driving dynamics.

  • BMW M135i

    The BMW M135i is synonymous with pure driving pleasure and exceptional driving dynamics. Its high-revving BMW M Performance TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder petrol engine with a 3.0-litre capacity generates 240 kW at 5,800 to 6,000 rpm and accelerates the car from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. What's more, it produces an incredibly powerful engine sound, as well as tremendous thrust whenever it's needed thanks to 450 Nm of torque.
    The chassis sits 10 millimetres lower and has firmer, more athletic damper and suspension characteristics that are unique to the M models and which transfer the full force of the engine safely to the road. The M Sport brake with blue brake callipers and the M logo ensures maximum braking power, even when the BMW is pushed to its limits. The superbly responsive variable sport steering with M-specific characteristics gives the driver precise feedback for safe handling. The M Aerodynamics package with specific air inlets at the front, exclusive 18" M light alloy wheels with Performance tyres and two tailpipes round off the exterior equipment features.
    In the interior, M door sill finishers, M sport seats, an M leather steering wheel, and M-specific instruments all demonstrate the car's dynamic pedigree.

  • Variable sport steering

    The variable sport steering with Servotronic creates a direct and agile steering response and ensures less physical effort is required to turn the wheel. It reacts to the angle of the steering wheel independently from the current speed with various steering ratios. This reduces the steering movement required when steering at particularly large angles. It features speed-dependent, variable power steering. This significantly increases agility and improves handling when driving dynamically through sharp bends and corners, or when swerving to avoid obstacles. It also makes parking, turning and manoeuvring easier. For small steering angles, the system provides excellent directional stability and a very high degree of steering precision.

  • M Sport suspension

    The M Sport suspension is characterised by sport suspension settings, and on cars with rear-wheel drive includes a chassis lowered by around 10 millimetres. It features shorter suspension springs and tighter damper settings, as well as harder stabilisers. Together these result in even more direct settings that facilitate a particularly dynamic driving style.

  • Adaptive M suspension

    The Adaptive M suspension is set ten millimetres lower, further increasing the vehicle's full dynamic potential. The driver can adjust the driving characteristics to enable whichever driving style is most appealing at the time – from comfortable to extremely athletic. Whichever setting is chosen, the Adaptive M suspension's electrically controlled dampers calibrate to suit the road conditions within fractions of a second. The system also uses numerous sensors that measure wheel vibrations, as well as vehicle speed, in order to achieve optimal damping and vehicle safety.
    COMFORT mode can be selected for relaxed travelling. SPORT mode enables a distinctly athletic suspension setting with noticeably tighter damper settings. For extremely dynamic driving, SPORT+ mode is the best choice: the DTC function (Dynamic Traction Control) is activated, which allows more wheel-slip on the drive wheels, for athletic driving that pushes the limits of the car's dynamics. However, the DSC function isn't completely disabled; rather it intervenes much later – within the limits of what is physically possible and safe – in order to stabilise the vehicle.

INTELLIGENT ENERGY MANAGEMENT.

The intelligent energy management in the BMW 1 Series is provided by a number of standard-feature BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, including the Automatic Start/Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering and Optimum Shift Indicator. The interplay between these technologies ensures sustainable mobility and maximum efficiency.

  • Brake Energy Regeneration

    Every time the brakes are hit, kinetic energy is generated and until recently this energy went unused. Brake Energy Regeneration takes advantage of this long-overlooked potential. It harnesses the coasting energy that is generated whenever the driver brakes or takes his or her foot off the accelerator and turns it into electricity. This electricity is then used to charge the car battery. The intelligent energy management system means that the alternator no longer needs to run constantly, which reduces the strain on the generator. The result: reduced fuel consumption and increased performance – classic BMW EfficientDynamics.

  • Electric Power Steering

    Electric power steering optimally adjusts the steering support to the current speed. This results in direct, precise steering behaviour at high speeds and effortless manoeuvrability when parking. The steering only consumes energy when it is really necessary. This saves fuel and reduces emissions.
    Instead of a hydraulic pump, it relies on an electric motor. In conventional systems, this pump must be constantly powered by the engine, but this electric support only runs when the steering wheel is being moved. When driving straight ahead or maintaining the same steering angle (e.g. on long bends), the electric motor is not active and does not consume any energy. By flexibly adjusting the steering support to match the current driving situation and speed, steering comfort is improved.

  • Optimum Shift Indicator

    Perfectly timed gear shifts can significantly help save fuel, particularly in urban traffic and over long distances. Optimised gear shifts, lower fuel consumption – the engine electronics calculate the most efficient gear for each driving situation and engine speed. An illuminated arrow symbol appears in the Info Display whenever the vehicle could be operating more efficiently in a higher or lower gear. The system also recognises quick acceleration, and will delay its recommendation accordingly until the engine speed has increased. BMW internal comparative tests have shown that vehicles with the Optimum Shift Indicator use around four per cent less fuel.
